Picture of Nick Torday

Managing Director

Nick has been with Sift Digital for two years, and was responsible for heading up all our work with the charity and cultural sectors before stepping up to become MD in July 2012. His journey into digital began back in 1999 when he was part of a New York-based British start-up providing integrated mapping solutions to the fashion and retail sectors. He then came back to the UK and joined the team that built the first major e-commerce platform for Centrica Group, which included British Gas and the AA. The corporate world soon lost its allure so Nick quit and volunteered for the London-based NGO Merlin, who seconded him to Ramallah in the West Bank to work for a Palestinian health NGO as a media consultant. Following an incredible year in the middle east Nick returned to London and spent the next 6 years heading up digital teams for a range of NGOs and charities, including Medical Aid for Palestinians, Carers Trust and Breast Cancer Care. Since then he has been lucky enough to work with most of the countries leading organisations such as the British Heart Foundation, Samaritans, Big Lottery Fund, British Red Cross and DEC to name but a few.

Nick's focus is to push Sift Digital forward and cement the agency's position as thought leaders in our specialist sectors. He is passionate that digital can be, and should be, a catalyst for cultural change; reshaping the way in which we talk to each other and our core audiences. He is equally focused on strengthening our own agency culture as one in which collaboration, integrity and creative focus can thrive. He heads up Because it's Good (www.becauseitsgood.org) a contributory community for digital specialists in the third sector and is a regular contributor to The Guardian on both their Voluntary Sector and Culture Professionals networks.

Nick has two very lively daughters and a third baby imminently joining the party, so that occupies most of his time. He lives in a quiet corner of North Somerset where he has serious aspirations to keep bees, once the time is right! He is also partial to the odd surf, like a lot of the Sift Digital team, and has an ever-growing percussion collection.

    Journeys
We recently launched the new site for ss Great Britain, the iconic Bristol heritage attraction. A lot of the language we've been using around that has concerned 'narrative' and 'journeys'. In fact it's ripe territory for all sorts of naval punnery but that's for another day. What it triggered in me is considering the strength of narrative as a compelling tool in all forms of life.
